Youth Stabilization and Detoxification Units

The Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) in seeking to create an effective and responsive continuum of substance abuse treatment services for adolescents, as well as to meet a growing demand for acute care, created in 2007 the first state-funded youth stabilization and detoxification units in Massachusetts.

These units provide youth in crisis with a safe, temporary, protective environment in which they can receive the care, supervision, assessment, and medical monitoring necessary to facilitate stabilization of their physical and emotional states.

Once stabilized, youth receive a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment of their substance use, social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. With this information, staff can develop appropriate aftercare resources and referrals for adolescents and their family.

The youth stabilization and detoxification services are for males and females between the ages of 13 and 17. Their length of stay is determined on their individual assessment and treatment planning needs, (an average stay is 14 days). Insurance may cover the cost of these services.
